A lot of people think of Singapore as just being the one island, or, sometimes, people will also know of Sentosa Island, with its reputation for fun galore. Whilst many of the main tourist attractions are located on the main island, it often comes as a bit of a surprise to people to learn that Singapore is actually made up of many different islands … and some of these are perfect for boat trips and excursions if you fancy getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life for a while.
Ferry services carry people across to some of the islands, others can only be reached if you charter your own boat to take you, and there are others that are completely off limits for visitors. There is another way of exploring the various parts of Singapore – and that is with a fantastic boat trip. Several operators offer boat trips to different islands, lasting for different durations. So why not see a little bit more of Singapore with a great boat trip?
Some top ideas to get you started include:
Cruise the Southern Islands
You can arrange a mini cruise around a couple of the beautiful islands to the south of the main island, and if you wanted to spend even more time enjoying the islands you can arrange to spend a night on Kusu Island as part of your trip.
Alternatively, there are boats that you can hop on and off between the main island’s South Marina Pier, Kusu Island, and St John’s Island. If you can visit during the week, there is a high chance that you will see hardly any other people around!
Better known for their religious and spiritual links than as islands for seaside fun, there are plenty of interesting things to see and do. And, of course, you can still spend some time soaking up the sun on the beaches too if you like! St John’s Island has some lovely white sand beaches, and it’s a good place for snorkelling. There are a number of interesting shrines on Kusu Island, as well as a turtle sanctuary.
The southern islands also include the Sister’s Islands and Lazarus Island, and it is possible to find day trips that visit all the islands.
Several providers operate cruises to enjoy the lovely sunset views. Many have refreshments and entertain on board too, and some offer dinner cruises.
Some highlights include seeing both the main island and Sentosa Island from the water, with all the lights sparkling in the distance and reflecting off the water’s surface. You will also see fireworks bursting into the sky from the nightly show on Sentosa Island.
Activity Boat Trips
A variety of companies offer a wide assortment of different activities to enjoy on a boat trip. These include fishing, snorkelling, diving, kayaking, swimming, sightseeing, BBQs … and more! There are also party boats for the young and young at heart, where you can enjoy the views and soak up the sun whilst having a dance and a great time at sea.
A boat trip between the two islands of Pulau Ubin and Pulau Ketam will take you through some fascinating areas of mangroves, rich with wildlife and a dream for photography lovers. If you jump off at Pulau Ubin you can experience a taste of how Singapore was in days gone by.
If you have more time, it is possible to arrange boat trips that take you to islands belonging to nearby countries as well as Singaporean islands. You can experience a little bit of Malaysia or Indonesia along with Singapore.
There are also boat trips along the river, which allow you to see the city from a totally different perspective.
